Herne Hill Velodrome
The Herne Hill Velodrome was built by George Lacey Hillier in 1891 and by the 1920s and 30s cycling events at the track were attracting thousands of spectators. During the Second World War the velodrome was used to store barrage balloons and it soon became overgrown and run down. In 1948 the Velodrome was hastily resurfaced with bitumen and became a venue for the London Olympic Games. This photograph was taken in July 1966 after which date interest in British cycling started to decline and was not renewed until the 2000s.
