Mural painting, Toynbee Theatre
Toynbee Hall in London was started by the Reverend Samuel Barnett and his wife Henrietta in 1884 in memory of their friend Arnold Toynbee who had worked closely with the poor in the East End of London. Although educational reform was the main activity at Toynbee Hall there were also social and leisure opportunities available such as the Debating Society, football and tennis clubs, holiday clubs for children, theatre groups and Bible classes. The small theatre has been popular at Toynbee Hall since it opened. Here children are painting a mural which was used as part of a stage set.
