Michael Faraday Memorial Monument
The Memorial Monument was designed by architect Rodney Gordon. Its location on the centre of a roundabout near Eelephant and Castle was chosen to commemorate the birth of scientist Michael Faraday in nearby Newington Butts. The monument houses a London Underground electrical substation. Originally the Grade II listed building was intended to have glass sides so that the substation could be seen however problems of vandalism meant that it was eventually made from stainless steel.
