The High Altar in Westminster Abbey
The High Altar at Westminster Abbey, April 1960. The altar and the reredos above were designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1867. The Abbey building dates to the time of King Henry III in the 13th Century and the three master masons were Henry of Reyns, John of Gloucester and Robert of Beverley. The large area between the High Alter and the Quire which can be seen here, was designed as a type of 'theatre space' to allow for the ability to host coronations.
