Lollard Adventure Playground, Lambeth
The Lollard Adventure Playground in Lambeth opened in 1954 on the site of the former Lollard Street School, which had been destroyed by bombing during the Second World War. It catered for around fifty children, from toddlers to teens, and was open April until September. Featuring sand, wood, old bricks, tools, drain pipes, corrugated iron and other waste material, it aimed to encourage children's creativity.
The playground was the work of landscape architect Marjory Allen (1897-1976). The driving force behind fift-one play areas for children in London, Allen was a tireless advocate for child welfare.
