Smithfield Porter
Porter at Smithfield market in 1955. Smithfield is London’s largest meat market which at its peak covered over 10 acres. The porters were called ‘Bummarees’ and they pulled the barrows and trays of meat for the traders in the market. The market opens for business at 3am and the porters would have been working for some time by then.
