Double columned playbill announcing performances taking place at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in April 1858. Among the plays listed are Shakespeare's Much Ado about Nothing performed on Friday 23 April. One of the actresses listed is Miss Ellen Ternan, the close companion of Charles Dickens. The young actress Ellen Ternan had joined Dickens’s theatrical company for a performance of The Frozen Deep in Manchester the previous year in 1857. He was 45 years old and she was just 18 years when they met. Their relationship lasted until his death and effectively put an end to her career as an actress.
