Fichus had evolved in the 18th century into a garment of modesty to cover the chest area. Made from the finest cottons and muslins, folded into a triangular shape, the fichus soon became a fashionable accessory. This fichu has been printed to shape with design appearing only on the outer folds.
Square white cotton muslin fichu, diagonally block-printed with a small repeat pattern of rust-coloured circles of leaves with a circle in the centre, and two sprigs of green leaves beneath on one half only, to form a triangle when folded. Hemmed all round. Condition: some small holes and darns; the green dye has run.
