Fan, commemorative fan
Commemorative fan for the Great Exhibition of 1851. White paper leaf features a hand-coloured wood engraving of the Crystal Palace and its visitors from different nationalities and occupations (recognisable from their dress), along with the words, 'THE GREAT EXHIBITION'. This central scene is flanked by blue and gold depictions of objects related to agriculture and industry with the flags of eight foreign countries, including France, Italy, Germany and USA (recto). The reverse shows four groups of women, separated by three heraldic shields in gold, practising four art - sculpture, dance, music and painting. Ivory guards are pierced and foiled while the ivory sticks are pierced, carved and foiled.
