Chemisette
The sleeveless chemisette was like the front and back sections of a shirt and was worn underneath dresses through the 19th century. This example is made from fine cotton muslin and decorated with embroidered leaves in satin stitch. Having a separate chemisette allowed for more robust practical undergarments like the chemise or a shirt which could survive tough washing practices. It allowed the style of a garment to be easily altered.
