Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1823
Townsend's Costumes plate 11.
J. Townsend of Jermyn Street, together with two other London-based publishers brought out monthly and seasonal series of fashion plates showing the latest Paris fashions. This hand-coloured engraving, plate II from 'Townsend's Quarterly Selection of Parisian Costumes' was published in 1823. The six vignettes show different types of headwear, all designed to work with the fashionable curled hairstyles. The top row, and possibly the illustration bottom right features turbans, which were fashionable for eveningwear. The two hats in the central row are decorated with ostrich feathers, which could be dyed to match the rest of the outfit. The bottom left image seems to show a lace cap to wear for a ball. The part of the clothing visible in the illustrations demonstrates the different ways gowns could be decorated including pin-tucks, piping and ruching.
