Tom Sayers as Clown
Hand-coloured theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of Tom Sayers in the role of a Clown as he appeared in Abon Hassan at the Britannia Theatre. Published by Redington and sold by J.Webb (Brick Lane). Such portraits would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
Tom Sayers (1826-1865) was a famous bare-knuckle prize fighter who took up acting on his retirement. He died two years after this performance at the Britannia. Sayer's death atthe age of 39 was attributed to tuberculosis, diabetes and the effects of heavy drinking.
