Fashion — 1957
Jacket, sut jacket
The jacket is part of an outfit that was remade by Mary Quant Ltd after Quant's original 1957 design for the exhibition 'Mary Quant's London' which ran from 29 November 1973 to 30 June 1974 at the London Museum at Kensington Palace.
Tailored in Harris tweed, a traditional British fabric, this suit wittily reworks a country style worn by the upper classes into a fashionable outfit for urban wear. The jacket is based on the Norfolk jacket, a classic informal style worn by adults and children for sporting and country wear from the mid-1870s.
In the original 1973 catalogue, the outfit is described as follows: 'Rust-red Norfolk style jacket; matching Harris tweed knickerbockers with camel, black and white checks; worn with pinafore dress. The use of knickerbockers as a fashionable garment was an early demonstration of Mary Quant's originality as a designer.'
