Archaeology — Mid-late 19th century
Jar
This whiteware marmalade jar found on an archaeological excavation in Church Street, Isleworth, close to Kew Gardens. The wording on the jar reads 'Smith & Co. Orange marmalade. Seville'. Mass-produced and mass-preserved foods like this were available from the mid-19th century and were mainly bought by the growing urban middle classes who could afford to buy ready-made preserves.
