Printed Ephemera — 1981-07-31
Not...
This is issue number 11 of 'Not...', a weekly publication produced by the 64 staff sacked by Time Out on 20 May 1981. The industrial dispute at the magazine was triggered by Time Out's decision to end an equal pay system wherein staff were paid the same amount across the board, regardless of their job. The 64 sacked staff were supported by their trade unions: the National Union of Journalists, National Graphical Association and Society of Graphical and Allied Trades.
This copy of 'Not...' was given out at the 1981 'It's Only Rock and Royal' festival at Crystal Palace Bowl. The festival was organised by the Greater London Council as an alternative to the royal wedding which saw Prince Charles marry Lady Diana Spencer. The line-up at the festival included Spirit and Ian Dury.
The front page of 'Not...' features an update on talks to end the Time Out dispute at the arbitration service ACAS and a report on the successful occupation of a Lee Jeans factory in Greenock which had been facing closure before a takeover by a London firm. The protest sit-in was organised by the all-women workforce, who were members of the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers.
