Printed Ephemera — 1888
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Theatre Programe for the play Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde starring Richard Mansfield as performed at the Royal Lyceum Theatre on August 11th 1888. The cream programme printed in red includes a cast list and synopsis of scenery. On the reverse are printed ticket and performance details. Such programmes or bills were issued free to theatre goers.
The actor Richard Mansfield brought the play Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde from America to London where it opened at the Lyceum Theatre on 6 August 1888. A rival version ran at the Opera Comique nearby. Mansfield caused a great stir with his powerful performance as the evil Mr Hyde. Unfortunately for the actor his convincing performances somewhat backfired when one concerned theatre goer wrote to the police suggesting the actor may be Jack the Ripper, whose murderous activities were concidentally taking place at the same time. Concerned about the accusation Mansfield attempted to regain public support by offering to organise a charity performance of Prince Karl to raise funds for the Bishop of London’s home and refuge fund.
