Two children at the 'FDR School for Handicapped Children', Hampstead, working in the handicraft room
Two children at the 'FDR School for Handicapped Children', Hampstead, working in the handicraft room. One is a wheelchair user.
The Franklin Delano Roosevelt school for Handicapped Children opened in Hampstead in 1957, where it remained until 1995. This photograph was taken during the opening week of the new light-filled, completely stepfree building surrounded by lawns and trees built by the London County Council. The school was attended by children with a range of conditions including cerebral palsy, haemophilia, heart disease and tuberculosis, and was named after American president Roosevelt who was left paralysed after contracting polio.
