A physical education lesson at the FDR School for Handicapped Children
The Franklin D Rooselvelt (FDR) School in Hampstead opened in 1950 for physically disabled and seriously unwell children. The school aimed to prepare pupils for independent life. Girls learned skills such as dressmaking, laundry or domestic service. Boys could choose from tailoring, carpentry, basket making, or shoemaking. Pupils were also given physiotherapy, and took part in sports and social activities.
