Elevated view of a street market in London
An elevated view of Caledonian Market, looking towards the market clock tower, c. 1936. Before the Second World War the Caledonian was the largest street market in London. After the war it moved to Bermondsey and the site was redeveloped as a housing estate and park, though the clock tower was retained as a feature. This and other street market photographs were taken to illustrate the book 'The Street Markets of London' by Mary Benedetta, published in 1936.
