Phases of the Irish Question
Linen handkerchief with a lithographic print in black ink, 1886. This handkerchief appears to commemorate a meeting between Balfour and Gladstone at Gladstone's country house, Hawarden, near Chester, to discuss the Irish Question. The problems of Ireland were a major issue in late 19th and early 20th century politics.
White cotton printed in black, machine hemmed. "Phases of the Irish Question"; central design of shamrock with Balfour seated with head in arms at desk and figures of men with clubs above. Four corners with figures: 1. Welcome to Hawarden; 2. We are one; 3. What's to be done; 4. You grand old spider; Finale - Ah Me!!. Narrow border of entwined shamrocks. Originally included with the 'Balfour papers', British Library.
