Hells Angels at Sloane Square, Chelsea
Hells Angels at Sloane Square, Chelsea, 4 May 1985.
The 1980s youth sub-culture scene is primarily associated with the emergence of Goths and New Romantics but older styles, such as the Hells Angels shown here, also continued to thrive. Hells Angels first emerged in America in the late 1940s and two 'chapters' were subsequently founded in London in 1969, one in South London and the other in East London. These merged to form a single London 'chapter' in 1973. Hells Angels are motorcycle enthusiasts who ride large powerful machines, such as the American-made Harley-Davidson, and sport the 'death's head' insignia on their leather jackets. They are non-conformists who reject mainstream culture, celebrate freedom and are intensely loyal to their group.
