Modettes with a Vespa motor scooter in Broadwick Street
A group of Modettes with a Vespa motor scooter pose for the camera in Broadwick Street, City of Westminster, 11 May 1985.
The 1980s youth sub-culture scene is primarily associated with the emergence of Goths and New Romantics but older styles, such as the Mods shown here, also continued to thrive. Mod culture emerged in the 1960s and young Mod women turned towards style icons such as the androgynous model Twiggy for inspiration, rejecting ladylike accessories in favour of figure-hugging sweaters, mini-skirts and shift dresses.
