Great Windmill Street, Soho
Great Windmill Street, Soho, 1981. The Windmill Theatre is a reconstruction of an earlier cinema, the Palais de Luxe, built in 1909. Designed to reflect the style of a windmill, one of which stood on this site until the late 18th century, the new theatre opened in 1931and soon began to specialise in variety performances. The theatre is famous both for its nude 'Windmill Girls' and for the fact that it was the only London theatre which never closed during the Second World War.
