A Billingsgate Porter and his barrow
Around 5 in the morning, a porter pulls his loaded barrow, assisted by a 'pusher upper', outside Billingsgate Market. He is moving fish from delivery vehicles to the merchants' stands on the trading floor, a task known as 'shoring in' in reference to the old practice of carrying fish ashore from boats once moored at Billingsgate Wharf. Another porter carries a load on his traditional flat-topped bobbin hat.
