Printed Ephemera — 1969
BIBA
In her autobiography 'From A to Biba' (first published in 1983) Barbara Hulanicki recalled how she thought of producing mail order catalogues because the company received many letters from customers wanting to buy by post. Hulanicki wrote that she 'couldn't wait to do our first catalogue. For the first time I could actually realize on paper what the perfect Biba dolly should look like.'
Biba worked on her catalogues with photographers she admired: Donald Silverstein worked on the first catalogue, Hans Feurer on the second and third. Hulanicki remembered that 'By the fourth catalogue I had enough courage to approach one of the greatest photographers of all, Helmut Newton, who became famous for his books some years later.'
According to the credits, this is the last catalogue, photographedy by Harri Peccinotti and featuring the model Elizabeth Born Neilson. The catalogue mainly featured summer clothes including bikini tops with matching shorts, large floppy hats and turbans.
