Russian refugees in the Poor Jews' Temporary Shelter, Leman Street, 1891
The Poor Jews' Temporary Shelter in Leman Street, Whitechapel, was established in 1885. It provided short term accommodation for newly arrived Jewish refugees, many of whom were escaping from persecution in Russia. The shelter was set up by two wealthy Jewish philanthropists, Samuel Montague and Hermann Landau.
