Disband the SPG
Flyer for a public meeting organised by the Friends of Blair Peach Committee urging 'Disband the SPG', an abbreviation for a branch of the Metropolitan Police called the 'Special Patrol Group'. The meeting was held at the Friends Meeting House in Euston Road. The text of the leaflet accuses the SPG of violence towards trade union members on strike and 'the intimidation of black communities and anti-racists'. Blair Peach was a teacher who emigrated to London from New Zealand. In May 1980, Peach died from head injuries after the SPG clashed with Anti-Nazi League supporters who were protesting at a National Front rally in Southall. There was a public outcry when Peach's death was attributed to 'misadventure'. However, at the same time, recommendations were made to limit SPG powers.
