Printed Ephemera — 1796-1814
Africa from the best Authorities
This map of Africa pinpoints many of the major sites where Europeans bought enslaved Africans. These include Goree, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Gold Coast and Loanda. Although quite small, it gives a good sense of the large continent’s coastal districts as well as its vast inland areas. Also shown are East African slave trade sites such as Zanzibar, Pemba and the island of Mauritius. This map was taken from an edition of Mathew Carey's 'General Atlas', which was first published in Philadelphia between 1796 and 1815.
