Photograph by Henry Grant showing children at Akmar Road School for Deaf Children in the early 1950s. When this photograph was taken, deaf children were encouraged only to speak and lip read. However, many of them were unable to attain a level where they could communicate with others. It was not until 1975 that some deaf schools in Britain began to teach sign language.
