Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1998
This is London #1
Mentor Chico's 'This is London #1' includes a self-portrait alongside people with dogs and an iconic London telephone box.
After studying Fine Arts in Ecuador, Chico came to London in 1997 as a refugee. He explained that 'when I arrived I suffered a culture shock. I tried to grasp all of those surprising elements. The very representative local telephone boxes. Punks. Dogs. The way people here love their pets - pets are like a child, a part of the family'.
This painting depicts these various elements of London life and combines them with the central portrait of the artist, framed by a black square. It is one of a pair of paintings by Chico which take London as their subject.
