Cambridge Circus, Charing Cross, in smog
Cambridge Circus from outside 84 Charing Cross Road during a 'pea souper' or dense smog caused by air pollution from burning coal, c. 1935.
After the Clean Air Act of 1956, which outlawed the burning of domestic coal in London, smogs like this became something of a rarity, but it is feared that they could return as a result of increasing emmissions from motor vehicles.
