Social History — 1977-1981
Badge, lapel badge
The Anti-Nazi League (ANL) was founded in 1977 in response to the rise of the National Front, a Fascist party which promoted racial hatred and the compulsory repatriation of immigrants. On the 13 August 1977 anti-racist protestors confronted a National Front march in Lewisham. In the wake of this event, the ANL was formed in London. Supporters included the miners' leader Arthur Scargill, anti-Apartheid activist and future Labour government minister Peter Hain, football manager Brian Clough, actor Warren Mitchell and playwright Arnold Wesker.
Between 1977 and 1979 some 750,000 ANL badges were sold. Customised badges were worn by different groups within the ANL including this one which was produced by gay anti-fascists. The badge features the ANL arrow emblem, a reference to the symbol used by anti-Nazi Social Democrats in Germany during the 1930s.
