Social History — 1978
Badge, lapel badge
This badge was produced for the 1978 Gay Pride march in London. Gay Pride events now take place in many cities across Britain and around the world each year. The first Gay Pride carnival and march to be held in London took place on the 1 July 1972.
The original inspiration for Gay Pride was the Stonewall Rebellion which took place in New York on the 27 June 1969. The Stonewall Rebellion or Riot was triggered by police harassment of a gay bar. The bar's patrons fought back in an event which has become a symbolic act of gay liberation.
