Archaeology — Middle Saxon; 8th century
Loomweight
Plain annular loomweight. Weights made of baked clay held the threads on looms tight, which made weaving easier. Foreign merchants came to Lundenwic to buy English woollen cloth. Finds of clay loom-weights, bone pin-beaters and spindle whorls show that Londoners were spinning wool and weaving cloth: some for home use, but some probably for export.
