A Gamba employee pleats the upper of a ballet shoe
Employees at Gamba shoemakers are photographed pleating the uppers of ballet shoes.
Luigi Gamba founded the company in 1903. He had come to Britain from Italy at the age of 14 and worked as a waiter at the Savoy Hotel. He later opened a dance shoe shop in Covent Garden that made pointe ballet shoes among others. Prior to this, all pointe shoes in England were imported from Italy.
Gamba shoemakers designed and supplied ballet shoes to famous dancers such as Anna Pavlova and Nijinsky.
