Lyons Corner House, Oxford Street
Wolfgang Suschitzky took this photograph of a couple enjoying tea in the Lyons Corner House at the junction of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road. Known as the Oxford Corner House this was the last of the three Corner house restaurants operated by the catering firm J. Lyons to open in 1928. Corner houses included a number of dining rooms and restaurants, each having their own distinctive style and atmosphere. The lavish interior seen in the photograph was typical of the Corner House style that became associated with offering a glamorous yet affordable dining experience.
