Employees at work in Lloyds of London, Lime Street
From the series ‘Work Stations’, co-commissioned by the Museum of London and Camerawork in 1987, documenting the new office culture of the 1980s and the emerging technologies that rapidly transformed the nature of the working day. This was the first body of photographic work looking at office life in Britain (diverging from the more typical documentary photography of the working classes) and it captures the mundanity, competition, rivalry, stress and gender imbalances of this new culture from a woman’s point of view. The images are accompanied by captions which are an integral part of the work. Sunil Gupta writes in an essay in the book: ‘Anna’s portrayal of office life as total war, where men do battle and women are relegated to supporting roles, is completely convincing. The feeling of aggression is carried through by her choice of text and the use of direct and all-revealing flash. She exposes the myriad details that go towards making an office space more appealing, and facial expressions not caught by the naked eye’.
