Women discussing a rent strike in Hanbury Buildings, Poplar
This image shows women residents of the Hanbury Buildings discussing their proposed rent strike. By the 1930s Hanbury Buildings in Poplar was one of the worst slums in east London. Appalled with their squalid living conditions, residents joined the Poplar Tenants' Defence League to organise a rent strike.
The photograph was taken by Cyril Arapoff who, with the journalist Jack Barker, produced a series recording life in Hanbury Buildings for Picture Post magazine, but it was not published.
