School boys, Sutton High Street
A candid snapshot of a group of schoolboys walking along Sutton High Streret, c. 1932. Although grammar and public schools had official uniforms, other schools did without. However, a standard school 'uniform' for boys was evident by the end of the 1920s. Younger boys wore flannel shorts and blazers. Some schools dictated that boys grew to a certain height before they were allowed to wear long trousers, though usually they had to be aged 14. Long socks and lace-up shoes were worn, plus the regulation school cap. On rainy days, both boys and girls wore belted mackintoshes.
