Battered wives need somewhere to go!
This feminist campaign poster was produced by Lewisham Women's Aid. It appeals to the public for help in building a refuge centre for victims of domestic violence.
This poster was produced in the 1970s at the height of the feminist 'women's liberation' movement. The movement campaigned against a range of issues, including domestic violence.
Campaigners established a number of 'safe houses', where victims and their families could take refuge. Greater public awareness about domestic violence led to the introduction of the Domestic Violence Act of 1976. This enabled women, for the first time, to bring court injunctions against violent husbands or partners.
