Our Miss Gibbs
Colour chromolithograph theatre poster promoting the musical play 'Our Miss Gibbs' performed at the Gaiety Theatre, the Strand, London. The poster is printed with a portrait of the actress Gertie Miller in the role of 'Miss Gibbs.'
This play opened on 23rd January 1909 and ran for 636 performances.
A review of the play printed in the Daily Mail two days after opening refers to the star Gertie Miller as having 'come on' most unquestionably. 'Her mannerisms are less marked. She no longer smiles at the gallery every two seconds. There were genuine comedy gifts about her playing on Saturday. She moves about with the same airy lightness as ever; and when she is dancing she is quite delightful'.
The reviewer as notes enthusiastically 'Beautiful girls, beautiful dresses, a beautiful setting - that is what 'Miss Gibbs' gives us in full and surfeit. Great taste in harmony of colour, a saturnalia of choriambic effect, a great palpitating beauty show! The music, sometimes spontaneously catchy, generally pretty, occasionally a little ambitious, is warbled and spoken with verve and point. Songs such as 'Mary' and 'Yip-i-ady-iday' are destined to "take the town." '
