Printed Ephemera — 1985-03
GLC Farewell Festival
Half of this pamphlet is printed upside down to allow readers to begin reading from either side. One half contains lists of events taking place in London as part of the Greater London Council (GLC) Farewell Festival. The other half is a directory of current GLC services listed with the names of the authority that will be responsible for their function after the council's abolition.
The Conservative government abolished the GLC in 1986. Following abolition, all services provide by the GLC were distributed among central government, the boroughs and a new set of London-wide bodies.
Tony Banks, then chair of the GLC, is quoted as saying the GLC would rather have a festival than 'sackcloth and ashes' to celebrate the services it provided. Events taking place over the week of festivities include Graeae Theatre's production 'In Whose Hands?' showing the effects and consequences of the abolition of the GLC on people with disabilities.
