Printed Ephemera — 1978
Temporary Carnival
The 'Temporary Carnival' programme sold for 10p at the Rock against Racism march and concert in Victoria Park, April 1978. The magazine unfolds to form a large montage poster showing performing bands and quotes from the artists. The concert was a response to the resurgence of National Front activity in London at the time. One of the performers, Tom Robinson, later recalled: 'The Carnival Against The Nazis on April 30, 1978 was a day that exceeded my wildest expectations. We had hoped perhaps as many as 20,000 people might march from Trafalgar Square, so we were gobsmacked when 80,000 turned up for what was a memorable afternoon of music and multiracial solidarity.' (quoted in The New Statesman, 28.04.2008)
