Printed Ephemera — 1906
Hearts of Oak Benefit Society
This is the programme for the opening ceremony of the Hearts of Oak Benefit Society head office at Euston Road by King Edward V11. The society was registered under the Friendly Societies Act which, before the National Insurance scheme was established, was approved by the government to administer mortgages and National Insurance benefits.
The opening ceremony, on 26 May 1906, involved the presentation to the king of a specially designed key to the offices. The hymn, 'Hearts of Oak' was sung as the king, queen, Princess Victoria, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Home Secretary entered the offices.
