Museum of London Archaeology Service — Late Medieval; 1440-1449
Foundation stone
This is one of two blocks of stone that were found in the foundations of Guildhall Chapel. The name of Thomas Knolles has been painted on this stone (and the name of Henry Frowyk on the other), with a dedication cross. Both men were wealthy Londoners who had served as mayor. In March 1440 Frowyk was appointed to a committee for the rebuilding of Guildhall Chapel, and two years later Knolles was appointed to supervise the completion of the works. The stones bearing their names must have been laid as part of a foundation and dedication ceremony for the chapel.
