Archaeology — Tudor; 1500-1525
Tile, stove tile
One of several stove tile fragments from the Abbey of St Mary Graces, Minories. State-of-the-art continental smokeless ceramic stoves were installed at St Mary Graces to warm the private apartments of the abbot. The tiles were made in West Germany around 1500 to 1525. The abbey was the third richest Cistercian house in England and the tiles reflect the cross-channel contacts of the clergy and their familiarity with continental customs of heating and interior decoration.
