Printed Ephemera — 1847
Playbill
London's competitive theatres used playbills to attract audiences to their spectacular performances. This double column playbill for the Royal Surrey Theatre, announces performances of 'the Barber of Seville', 'Fra Diavolo', 'Guy Mannering', 'Black Eyed Susan', 'Macbeth', 'Forest Maiden and the Moorish Page' and 'Rob Roy'.
This playbill is dated 14th June 1847, and the theatre is announced as 'Davidge's Royal Surrey Theatre'. From 1845-1847 the theatre was managed by Mrs Frances Davidge, and in 1847 the Surrey provided performance space for the Drury Lane Opera. The Times reviewed a performance at the Surrey on the 3rd June 1847, and described as a "complete success" and praised Mr Tully's work on the music.
The Surrey had an established reputation for its melodramas, and several of those advertised enjoyed extended runs. 'Black Eyed Susan' for example, was first performed at the Surrey on the 8th June 1829.
