Pennies in the Mud, Wapping
This wartime river scene shows children searching for pennies in the Thames mud at low tide. The bombed barges are a reminder that London is at war.
The building in the background is the famous riverside tavern, The Prospect of Whitby. Possibly dating back to 1520, the tavern was renamed in the1770s after the collier 'Prospect', registered at the port of Whitby. It used to moor regularly off the tavern and became a landmark. The pub is said to have been a regular drinking place for Charles Dickens, Samuel Pepys and James Whistler.
