Social History — 1770-1778
Door, prison door
This pair of wooden doors reinforced with sheet iron and iron studs were part of the fixtures and fittings of Newgate Prison. The doors have rifle slots through which prison officials defended the prison against rioters during the Gordon Riots of 1780. They probably date from the rebuilding of the prison to the designs of George Dance that took place in the 1770s.
