Teleprinter

This teleprinter would have used the Post Office's telex service. This allowed for printed communication between subscribers both in Britain and anywhere around the world. The teleprinter incorporates the keyboard for typing messages and an integral dialling unit. It is mounted on a console stand which saved office space.

The teleprinter functioned like an electric typewriter but when a call was taking place between two subscribers both machines would operate simultaneously to produce identical messages at both ends. Calls were made by pressing the dial key and dialling the number. Users could attract eachother's attention by pressing a bell key which sounded an alarm and illuminated a red light on the dialling unit at each end. Teleprinters were rented from Post Office Telecommunications on a quarterly basis.
